Salla, Zid or Shopify: which platform to sell in Saudi Arabia?

Salla, Zid or Shopify for a store in Saudi Arabia? Mada payments, ZATCA invoicing, design and expansion: how to choose based on your own project.

An online store mock-up on a laptop and a phone, comparing e-commerce platforms

In Saudi Arabia, three platforms come up in almost every online store project: Salla and Zid, two Saudi platforms, and Shopify, the global reference. None of them is "the best": each one fits a type of project.

Salla and Zid: built for the Saudi market

Both platforms were created in Saudi Arabia, for Saudi merchants. Their big advantage: everything local is already built in.

  • Arabic admin and storefront from day one.
  • Local payments: Mada, Apple Pay, STC Pay, and instalments with Tabby or Tamara.
  • ZATCA e-invoicing built in, mandatory for the merchants it applies to.
  • Delivery connected to Saudi carriers.

The result: a store can launch in one to two weeks. Their limit: design stays within the available templates, and many stores end up looking alike.

Between the two, Zid is strongly focused on the Saudi market, while Salla is gradually opening up to the UAE and Egypt.

Shopify: freedom and international reach

Shopify offers more design freedom, the largest app ecosystem in the world and solid multi-country, multi-currency selling. It is the best choice for a brand that wants a carefully crafted identity or plans to sell in several countries.

However, Shopify Payments is not available in Saudi Arabia: Mada, STC Pay and ZATCA invoicing go through third-party apps and gateways. It works, but it takes more setup.

How to choose

| Your situation | The most logical choice | |---|---| | You are starting out and selling only in Saudi Arabia | Salla or Zid | | You want to launch fast on a small budget | Salla or Zid | | Your brand relies on a unique design | Shopify | | You also target the UAE, Europe or the US | Shopify | | Your catalogue or needs are very specific | Shopify or custom development |

Subscription prices change regularly: always check current pricing on each platform's website before deciding.

The real issue: standing out

Whatever the platform, what sells stays the same: a strong identity, great product photos, product pages written in Arabic for Saudi readers, and clear navigation on mobile.
